Comparison

FastPage vs Instagram alone for hospitality

Instagram is where customers discover you. Google is where they decide. Without a real website, you're missing the second half of the customer journey — the half that ends in a booking.

The verdict

Instagram is where customers discover you. Google is where they decide. Without a real website, you're absent from the second half of the customer journey — the half that ends in them showing up.

Most cafes have an Instagram. Most cafes don't have a website. The unspoken assumption is that the Instagram IS the website — and for a lot of new venues, especially in the first year, that works fine. Customers find you through reels, see you in stories, save you to a list.

The problem is what happens when customers stop finding you through scrolling and start finding you through searching. That's the moment Instagram stops being enough.

What Instagram is genuinely best at

Instagram is the single best discovery channel for hospitality. Reels. Explore. Geotagged posts. Tagged photos by customers. The algorithm puts your latte art in front of someone who's never heard of you, three suburbs over, who saves your post and shows up the next weekend. No website can do that.

It's also where you tell your story over time. The renovation behind-the-scenes, the new pastry chef, the staff at trivia night. That's not a website's job — and it shouldn't be.

This isn't an "Instagram bad" comparison. It's "Instagram for discovery, website for everything else".

What you're missing without the everything else

A customer doing a search like "best brunch in Fitzroy" doesn't land on Instagram. They land on Google. Google shows them a list of cafes, each with an "Open now" badge, a rating, an hours snippet, and a website link. Without a real website, your venue might still appear in the local 3-pack — if your Google Business listing is dialled in — but you'll be the only entry without a "View website" link. The customer goes to the cafe with the website.

Three moments where the absence costs you:

  1. A customer who already heard about you Googles your name. Your Instagram shows up, but Google's local card doesn't have an "open now" or a menu link.
  2. A friend texts your venue. iMessage tries to unfurl an Instagram URL. It shows a generic Instagram tile, not your venue.
  3. You change your hours for the holidays. On Instagram you post a story. The story expires in 24 hours. On a website, the hours just update.

The honest version

Keep Instagram. Add a real website. Use Instagram for discovery and storytelling. Use the website for the moments customers are searching, not scrolling. They're two different jobs and you need both.

Being honest about it

We built FastPage because we think it's the right tool for hospitality venues. We don't think it's the right tool for everyone.

Pick Instagram if…

  • You're a pop-up or festival stall without a fixed venue or hours.
  • You're pre-launch and testing the concept before committing to a real site.
  • You explicitly only want to be found by Instagram users, not Googlers.

Pick FastPage if…

  • Customers Google your name and you want a real result, not an Instagram link.
  • You want hours, menu, and a booking button on one findable page.
  • You'd rather not depend on Meta's algorithm for customers to find you.
